What may change?

What may change? This is the motto under which the next BauZ! congress will be held. The motto refers to the 2015 Paris Agreement, i.e. the agreement on the decarbonization of the world economy by 2050. What has to/could/should/might change in the area of planning and building in the years to come in order to reach that goal? Here’s a preview!

What may change? The topics

Cooperation!
Cooperation will rely on a common data set without being confined to such. We will be provided with expertise by our international partner Finland on the already-advanced state of play there: BIM for buildings, city models above the level of buildings.

Cooperation takes place alongside a chain of planning, execution and building operation across many disciplines and technical subsections. This chain is interrupted for a reason, yet not without inflicting some damage, by public-procurement procedures. Can it remain that way? We are going to hear suggestions from Austria and Germany on this topic.

Developing locations

Rock, paper, scissors is a game that familiarizes kids with the concept of mutual influence. People, buildings, neighborhood is a comparable triple concept, with its individual components impacting one another in a circular fashion. Thinking in these circular terms is becoming ever-more important. We are going to hear contributions on the Swiss methodology field-tested in Austria, concepts from Vienna, and insights into the realities of urban planning in Mumbai.

A special case of mutual dependence of location and building is constituted by plus-energy buildings as nodes within a grid into which renewable energy is fed and from which buffer energy is absorbed; here, time-dependent electricity demand makes the triple concept come full circle. There will be presentations from Liechtenstein, Austria and Slovakia.

Criteria for future-proof buildings

The game never ends: How can we identify whether a building can aptly fulfil its intended purpose? Building assessment systems endeavor to reach this goal, define requirements, and thus also become planning aids. But be aware: the objectives are contradictory and change as societal development changes, and with them, the criteria that remain incomplete and contradictory in the course of such development. Are we talking about criteria for the buildings of tomorrow? About leeway for individual and location-dependent criteria? We will hear contributions from Vorarlberg and the Lake Constance area, and will deal with the operation of buildings and green infrastructure.

Thinking in life cycles

Whether it is about money, energy efficiency, CO2 emissions or the scenarios after the end of utilization: it is always the thinking in terms of life cycles that constitutes the more realistic option. The methods used to achieve this goal are in the process of brisk development. There will be presentations from Germany and Austria on this topic.

Learning from building operation

Round tables

The topics discussed at the round tables are designed to accompany and treat in-depth what happens in the plenary: it will be about green spaces, social free spaces, neighborhood assessment, new building criteria and prototypes as well as building rehabilitation.
